OK I have an installation for 64bit windows but is there any benefit to useing it? I have an AMD 3500+ 64bit chip, but I am unsure about going thru the installation only to find out that I am better with normal windows.
thanks

Performance will definitely increase. With the extra bits, your RAMs won't have to work as hard. However, even though recently there has been an increase in driver support for 64-bit platform it is still very limited. So, if you don't mind the lack of driver support I say go for it and put the AMD to its 64bits usage. I think from what I'm getting from you is that you already have the 64 bits window in hand, if you're only thinking about 64bit I suggest waiting for VISTA and then decide.

Huh? Not true. I mean, that doesn't even make any sense...

The 64-bit platform won't perform any better than a 32-bit platform for 32-bit applications, with the exception of any OS API's that MSFT might have been able to tweak.

Driver support for the 64-bit platform, as Wall said, is still lacking.

However, you'll be able to take advantage of 64-bit apps when they come out. Since the proc can do 64-bit math, math-intensive applications (can you say 3D games) should get a performance boost. Sixty-four bit procs can also address more physical RAM than the 32-bit procs, but unless you're running >4GB RAM that probably doesn't matter to you.
