I have this new Rig I'm currently Building and i was just wondering if this OS (which i had since November 2005) which i haven't really used, worth installing into my new rig???

I heard alot of reviews and remarks about this OS, not being so compatible with so many software and even some hardware i think.

this is my systems specs as follows:

Processor: Core 2 duo e6600 2.4Ghz ( planning on over-clocking this baby ^_+ )
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-N680SLI
Memory: OCZ 2GB DDR2 PC2-8500 NVIDIA SLI ready
Hard-drive: WD Raptor 74GB 10,000RPM
Video card: *what i have ryt now* 2x 7600GTs in SLI* but will replace them with 1x BFG 8800GTx OC 768MB (ordering it sometime this month)
Sound card: just on-board (but any suggestions would be nice hehehehe)
Power Supply: Thermal Take Toughpower 850watt SLI ready
CPU Cooler: Zalman CNPS9700
Casing: Thermal Take ARMOR VA8003SWA Full tower
OS: NOT SURE YET ????????????

This question is asked at least once per week, so you might want to try the borked Search feature. 🙂

Been using WinXP 64bit for over a year now. It's come a long way, but there's still very little advantage using it over the 32bit version. Licenses are very cheap compared to it's 32bit counterpart so if cost is an issue, it's something to look at.

Personally, I'd opt for Vista if you're going to get a new license .

Been on it for over a year and 🙂
Can't complain besides a few quirks looking for certain drivers. (it's there if you really look for it)
Unless you could get it for free otherwise I'd opt for Vista.

Unfortunately, if something doesn't work under XP x64 now, it'll likely NEVER work, since all the attention will be going to Vista drivers and Vista compatibility.

Hardware-wise maybe, but software not at all.

x64 drivers are way much better to be found available than, say about a year ago.
In some cases x64 driver is co-shared with Vista 64 like my Kworld tuner driver.
I have yet come across any thing I need that I could not find, driver wise. i.e. printer (Epson) wireless usb, wireless mouse (LT), graphic card (Nvidia), sound card (x-Fi), hdtv tuner (Kworld).
The bottom line is that if you insist to use it, go right ahead, no need to worry.
A very satisfied x64 user.🙂

i had this OS since December of 2005, never really used it and since Im building a new computer, might as well use it for now, until Vista is all up and solid with most software and hardware, if not all.

Thank you all though for all the tips and info ^_^

I had the same question as ALV7 and it's nice to hear there are satisfied XP 64 users out there. I've been testing Vista for a month and a half now and I really, REALLY can't explain just how awful I think it is at this stage. I'll try to suffer it another month though, until I finally build a new machine and install XP 64 and perhaps Server 2003 64 bit as well, for kicks.

XP64 is orphaned, I highly recommend running Vista64 if you want a 64bit Windows OS. Can you perhaps elaborate on what you think is awful, it's basically a more scalable and stable version of XP64.
