my machine is a Dell Precision Workstation 390. I have BSOD (it reboots automatically) once in a while, but not frequent enough for me to know what is causing it.

I've come to suspect its the intel matrix RAID1 setup of 2 hitachi 400GB drives (quite old) or it's my sound blaster audigy 2 ZS xp64bit drivers, but it doesn't happen often enough for me to want to pull either one to test it (dont want to affect my daily computing)

anyone can suggest another way to debug this? or are there known issues? i've tried to update my intel matrix to the latest 7.5 version, and it's been okay for about a week, but this morning I got another crash. luckily i wasn't working on anything serious.

I don't think it is the Matrix setup.
Right click on My Computer Then click Properties. Click the Advanced tab. On the Startup and Recovery window, click Settings. Uncheck the Automatically Restart.

Save everything.

Now you will get a BSOD. The error can be searched on Google.
