I did not know that, I thought the Longhorn's retail name would be the x64 XP

Longhorn is a completely new OS. Think 98SE -> XP. Revamped and much "better" supposedly. We'll see. I just don't want it to cost more than $150 because that's ridiculous. $150 is a third of what i paid for my entire computer.

Well you statement makes sence, but it is not entirely true. XP is based on NT4.0 and was co-developed by IBM and Microsoft but the deal went sour (like all other deals MS has made and still makes {I.E. SUN}) The Two Companies parted ways and IBM came out with OS/2 Warp as a result of their half of the work. But the MS marketing machine won the battle and went on to mess up perfectly good code. You will never see an ATM running NT 4.0, 2000, or XP; but I have seen a few that run OS2 Warp!

I think he meant that the difference between XP and Longhorn will be similar to the difference in features and functionality between 98SE and XP - not that they share the same code base

This is a rather ignorant statement.

You will never see an ATM running NT 4.0, 2000, or XP; but I have seen a few that run OS2 Warp!

Actually, ATMs running Windows are everywhere. Unfortunately, many of them are probably still running NT, but more and more are running XP Embedded.

so when is longhorn going to come anyway? is it going to be 64 bit? will ms allow the free upgrade from a full pro liscence or will that change?

i need either pro or media center but it would seem to make sense to get the pro if i can upgrade it to longhorn which will have media center in it for free.

Why on earth would Microsoft give you something for free, especially a brand new OS?

Windows XP64 will be free if you already own a Windows XP Professional edition copy (and jump throught some hoops, I guess) and if you don't, you'll just have to by it new.

Windows x (x being whatever MS decides the marketing name for Longhorn will be) aka Longhorn, will come out in 2006 or 2007 most likely. It will be a new operating system you will have to pay for, and it will probably come in 32 and 64 bit iterations.
