Ok im working on a computer here that i just put xp on. It originally had 98 on it, and the woman said she was also having problems shutting down in 98. I tried disabling aspi in the bios and windows wont boot then for some reason. Its a gateway e-3400, pIII 1000/133 256mb ram. XP SP1. Any suggestions?

Did you have any old antivirus software, utility software, etc on the Win 98se before?

I would disable them, and then try to shutdown the machine. It might be old legacy software causing the problems.

This may be totally unrelated but the last time I encounter a shut down problem on a new build (win 2k) the problem was fixed when I installed the driver for the Netgear NIC.

If you installed windows xp with acpi enabled then disabled it in the bios windows will have major problems with that. Re-enable acpi in the bios and see if it will boot.

If you want to turn off acpi you will have to install windows again. Easiest way is to turn it off in the bios then reinstall.

I don't think there is a way around that. I have been reading here for years and it was the same with win 2000. You don't have to do a format to the drive you can install over the existing xp install. Kind of like an upgrade. Maybe that will help some.

If nothing else a bump for more ideas.

When you say it won't shutdown, do you mean you get the "Safe to turn off your PC" message and you have to manually switch off the box?

If so, go to Device Manager and SHOW HIDDEN DEVICES.
Look for NT Legacy APM and see if it is enabled.
If it's disabled, enable it and try to shutdown.
