Windows XP won't recognize VIA 4-in-1 drivers

After a fresh reinstall of a SP1 slipstreamed version of XP, I ran the installer for the VIA 4-in-1 drivers and rebooted. However, nothing happens after reboot. The devices are still using the MS drivers. I checked to make sure that all the .inf and .sys files the 4-in-1 installer should have installed are where they need to be.

I have turned off unsigned driver warning under Security Policies.

My system is has been a bit unstable without the 4-in-1's. Anyone know what could be causing Windows to refuse to detect them?

Maybe your slipstream disk isn't working very well?... It sure does seem strange the 4in1's aren't installing, I've been using them for years on many different OS's and they always work. Try installing XP without SP1 then update from the website.

You could also go into system in the control panel and install them manually but I would get a slightly older version (best for older motherboards like ours) and see if they install with no problem

I would, but there is a strange problems with my setup. With the original XP install, it would hang with a black screen after it says "starting up windows" after loading all the scsi drivers during installation. The dynamic update setup files do not help either, but slipstreaming in SP1 seems to do the trick.

What HAL is installed? (Standard, ACPI, etc..)

I have tried both HALs (pressing F7 when it says F6). It does not help. There is probably some issue related to my video card (BFG GF4 Ti4200 128MB) and my motherboard (Iwill KK266) because if I swap in a Voodoo3 or a GF2 GTS the install will proceed fine with the original XP disc.

The reason is this, Windows XP was released after your motherboard, so Windows XP already has fully compatible drivers for your mobo devices.

So when you try to install the VIA 4 in 1 drivers Windows XP sees them as old drivers and doesn't use them.

You could force the VIA drivers by going to each device yourself and selecting "Update driver" in device manager, then select Manually selection (advanced) and choose the VIA drivers.

I would recommend you to stay with the Windows XP drivers since they are newer and have been tested to work with Windows XP (WHQL), your old drivers probably wasn't tested to work with Windows XP and are not WHQL.

<bangs head on desk>

Windows XP was released in 2001. 4-in-1 (or Hyperion) drivers have been released since then. He said he's tried the 4.51s. They were released after Windows XP. That makes them newer.

I need a drink....

For KT266A based motherboards, installing any Hyperion release will ONLY install the AGP GART driver ("VIA CPU-to-AGP Controller"). Even if you have IDE checked, it won't install any IDE driver. It will also not install any INF driver, since WinXP was natively capable of identifying all the KT266A "parts" at first release.

That's just for the KT266A (and older) chipsets. This MAY also hold true for newer chipsets. Since we don't know what you have, and "My System Rigs" doesn't work.
