Windows XP won't boot anymore.

It won't boot into safe mode or normal.

When I boot off the windows CD it doesn't show that there is a windows XP install to repair.

Why doesn't the windows CD see the windows XP install? Is there anything I can do to make the windows CD see the windows install so that it will repair it? Or is there anything that can be done? Will I just have to install windows fresh?

Also, isn't there a backup of registry files that can be replaced in cases like this?

I did that already, didn't help.

I also tried downloading xbboot.exe and I made a bootable cd out of it and tried fdisk /mbr. I read that others had gotten that to work for them but it didn't for me.

Looks like the pc posts but does not load windows. Whats the error msg that you get?

Does the bios see the hd? If it does, thats good. You need to get a hold of a Knoppix Live CD (http://www.knopper.net/knoppix/) or UBCD for windows disk and see if they read the disk, since both establish a network connection, you can even try to copy important files to another computer. UBCD4win (http://www.ubcd4win.com/) also allows you to run chdsk and other hd tools, the snag is it has to be created for your OS. You could also check the regular UBCD (http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/) it may run these tools also.

It sounds like your HD boot sector is too corrupted for Windows to detect the installation.

The easiest fix is clean install on a second HD then slave your original and recover your files in the windows environment.

If you have a laptop and it can boot from USB then use and external drive.

If you have a laptop and cannot boot from USB then I would consider booting from the Knoppix live CD as slowlearner suggested.

Well, ok I know you will probrably just tell me to format and thats ok if thats what has to happen. I actually backed up all the info already.

What happens when I boot up is it will go to the windows XP loading screen then it will just go black.

If I boot into safe mode it will load files, up till the agp404.sys file and will just sit there at that.

I was wondering if I would be able to copy a file or run a command or do something for the windows install cd to see the windows installation but if I can't do anything like that then I will just have to reinstall from scratch.

Just repaired a system with those exact symptoms. All that was required in that case was to run-

chkdsk /f/r

fixboot

and it booted to desktop. I found it had some nasties on it, so ran
roguescanfix and smitrem, and ran Panda online. Then installed spybot S&D, adaware, and antiVir. So, give chkdsk /f/r a try if you haven't yet. Good luck.

Is fixboot differn't then fixmbr? Is fixboot a 3rd party file? Or did you do it all from the recovery console?

It is right there in the RC, just type help to see a full list of commands. Fixboot writes a new sector on the boot partition, and fixmbr repairs the master boot sector, so yes, they serve different puposes.
