first enable viewing of all files including operating system files.
Navigate to C:/windows/inf
Open sysoc.inf
find msmsgs=msgrocm.dll,OcEntry,msmsgs.inf,hide,7 in the file and take out the word hide so the line would look like msmsgs=msgrocm.dll,OcEntry,msmsgs.inf,,7
Close the file and save it
Now go to the Add and remove programs applet in the control panel and you will be able to uninstall windows messenger.
Make sure to click on the add remove windows components button.
Note: You will be able to uninstall other unneeded programs by removing hide from the sysoc.inf file as well.

I solved the problem by opening MS Messanger, and going to Tools, then Options. From there I went to the Preferences tab unchecked "Run this Program at Startup" and "allow this program to run in the background."

I then went to Outlook Express, Tools, Options, General tab and unchecked "Automatically Log On to Windows Messanger."

It was that easy. No more Messanger in the systray. No more Outlook Express lag. All is good.

AmusedOne is right. That's the way to do it. The only problem with that method is that you usually wind up having to go through that little procedure each time you update MS Office, and even after some Windows updates. (I think those had to do with Windows Messenger, though, and that would make sense.)

Uninstalling Windows Messenger has caused some real headaches for users of Outlook, as audiophan has mentioned. The tweak for fixing Outlook Express doesn't help an Outlook user!

woohoo! found something like the outlook express dealie for outlook!

instead of doing the whole registery thing, after you disable messenger just do this:

in outlook: tools>options>other
at the bottom there is an option to enable instant messaging in outlook-just disable it

outlook starts instantly, no msn, no reg edit!!!

You is a good person, audiophan. I remember a current thread somewhere else where someone was having a problem with Outlook starting very slowly after getting rid of Windows Messenger. I'll try to find it.

I don't know if this is of any value at this point, but I ran across the following and it seems to work quite well. Go Start > Run and cut and paste the following; "RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove" and press OK. Without the quotes.

I learned of it at this site.

Help and Support is your friend. You don't need to uninstall Automatic Update. You can just turn it off.

Start | Control Panel | Performance and Maintenance | System. Click on the Automatic Updates tab. The choices are self-explanatory.
