hey all, i have been researching this problem for a few days on the net (google groups and web pages) and i simply cannot find an answer. i see plenty of people describing the problem, but nobody has a way to fix it. here is what has happened.

first, a description of the PC. ECS K7s5a MoBo, athlon xp 1600+, 256 MB DDR PC2100 (crucial), tnt2ultra (diamond) aureal vortex oem card, tekram dc-390u2w scsi controller, ibm ultrastar 9es 9gig hard drive (ultra2 lvd), plextor 4x12 cdr, pioneer dvd, generic ide cdrom

here is what happened
1. unreal tournament froze my computer (never have been able to make it run in XP)

2. when i reboot, the login freezes after i click on my name and put in my password. it also gives a system beep.

3. i press ctrl alt del, and it loads fine.

4. if i log in as a different user, it gives me the "Windows created a temporary paging file on your computer because of a problem that occurred with your paging file configuration when you started your computer. The total paging file size for all disk drives may be somewhat larger thatn the size you specified."

5. Set windows xp to run w/o a paging file. i can log in fine, and pc runs fine, but i cannot run apps that require a lot of ram (like counterstrike)

6. every time i go into the pagefile settings, i get the "Windows created..." error.

7. try to tell it to make a new paging file. (manually, and let windows decide) -> no effect.

8. manually edit the registry to use a different pagefile name with custom size. -> doesn't create file.

9. countless permutations of all of the above.

my event viewer for the system has the following errors in it on boot.

The Logical Disk Manager Service failed while registering for device handle notifications on device \\?\storage#volume#1&30a96598&0&signatured6e0d6doffset7e00length220312e00#{53f5630d-b6bf-11d0-94f2-00a0c91efb8b}. Win32 Error: 1066.

You may want to just install on top (choose upgrade). You will retain all of your settings and it usually fixes alot of the 'weird' problems that crop up (I'm lumping this into the weird category ;))

yeah... i am in the middle of exams, and i don't want to get into all of that now. this is a weird problem that seems to be happening to A LOT of people on the web, and nobody has been able to describe a fix. it is definitely a weird one. usually searching on google can fix just about any problem. no luck this time, i guess.

I'd say 80% of the page file errors I see in 2k and XP are permission related.
Check the security sheet for the root of your C: drive (or whatever drive the page file is on) and ensure that the system account is included, with full control.

Alot of people like to remove the Everyone group from thier C: root, which is often a good idea. However, the Everyone group includes the system account, so if you take it out, you need to put System in.

Maybe this isnt your problem, but that's what comes to mind immediately.
