Windows xp welcome screen hangs.

As soon as I type in the password at the welcome screen, the computers hangs for 20 - 30 seconds. It seems like all the drivers and startup programs are loading during the welcome screen instead of processing upon seeing the desktop.

systems spec are

MSI KT3 Ultra2
XP 1900+
512 Crucial 2100 DDR
Maxtor 40 GB
Ati 8500LE
SMC 10/100
Windows XP Home
