WINDOWS XP vs WINDOWS 2000

Right now I have Windows 2000 Professional installed on my 1 user computer system. Is it worth it to install Windows XP, I have access to it, just need to know if it is a lot better then Windows 2K or not, because now Win XP is at a professional level, no more beta stuff, and its being sold everywhere. Should I install this OS or not? Thanks

um, windows xp isn't out yet... office xp just got released... but not windows.

windows 2000 > windows xp imo.

The only thing better in XP than in Win2k is the compatability toolkit. However you can replace the Win2k toolkit with the Whistler compatability toolkit (for free). No more need to dual boot.

yep im using the beta right now...you could go to properties of a program, and click on the compatibility tab, it allows you to choose what OS is it made to run for(of course microsoft OS only), you also get to choose if you want it to be 256 color, 640x480 res since windows xp supports a minumum of 800x600 and 16bit color

if you haven't used it...don't give your opinions, ive used both win2k and winxppro, win2k gave me nothing but trouble. winxp had no errors, never had those general protection fault, or any errors, rock solid. win2k i couldn't install many programs(about 80%of install shield programs didn't work!!:|) Most programs are install shield, so a very high percentage of programs didn't work(including my soundcard drivers)

i've tried both. i prefer win2k, just cuz it has much less bloat. if we can rip the compatibility feature from xp and put it in 2k, i personally have no need to switch. and win2k IS > winxp. 🙂

Don't take this the wrong way, but that is probably user error. Something in the way you set your box up or something you didn't install that you should have, etc.

does anyone else have a link for the compatibility kit? ive tried getting it from the links posted but freedrive isnt having any of it 🙁

00aStrOgUy00: if i didn't say it, don't assume. :disgust:

i've used both, for me xp was nothing but additional bloat. both ran stably.

W2k have been working fine for me so far. I didn't notice any of those install shield problems at all. What programs in particular are you trying to install?

Win2k's very good for "work programs". But i've had afew games kicking it to reboot, or just ddidnt' work. I'm dualbooting win98 to play those games. If XP can fix that, that'd be awesome of coures. but you'd think this kind of backward compatibility/legacy support will drag the XP down abit.

And people said the same thing about Windows 2000 when it first came out when compared to Windows NT 4.0...but I see that everyone is running Win2k now. They'll make the switch to WinXP as well, just you wait 😉

I for one will be buying WinXP on day one. They will probably be running specials like they have with Office XP (i.e., but OfficeXP Standard for $239, and get a free digital camera and Handspring Visor). Hell, I'd sell the free stuff and keep the OS. Extra $$$ for me 😀

I'm using Win2K Pro but I did the necessary steps to remove the bloat. I hope Win XP allows the removal of bloatware that you don't need. One thing I'm just(and never) will be comfortable with is that XP activiation confirmation hogwash.
