Windows XP Volume Control Problem

Ever since I was given a "Live! Drive," and a SoundBlaster Live! card, I've had a weird problem with the Windows XP volume control. Previously my microphone would work with just the Microphone box checked, although with the Live! Drive, Line-In 2 / Microphone must be checked in order for it to work.

Now I usually use my microphone for voice chatting and playing games like Counter-Strike or any other multiplayer FPS which voice helps in. The Line-In 2 box remains checked for one level and then it reverts back to "Microphone." While it's not a BIG problem to switch it back after every round, it does get rather tedious.

Is there a way to set your default Microphone to "Line-In 2"?

Leave the volume control settings the way you want them - whatever you want checked, unchecked, etc - and leave the Volume Control window open. Then reboot. Sometimes that works for me.

/bump

Sorry about the bump, but it's getting more annoying than ever to alt-tab out considering I've moved over to playing CS:S (which takes FOREVER to Alt-tab in and out of) and I really hate having to check it every time a map changes.

Does anyone know how I could fix this? Thanks, Jeff7, for your input; though it didn't work. :(

did you change it through windows sndvol32 or using sblive util ? if you're using sndvol32 (windows default) try using sblive ones, because the problem you mentioned seemed to me related to driver issue, or to a voice-related software that you used (voice recognition, etc) trying to enforce something related to the mic. Also try to check audiohq / creative control panel for an option that related with that issue, i can't tell you if exists, as i'm not experienced with livedrive. i had a platinum drive though ... . Also you said line-in 2 / mic ? which mic in jack did you use ? the one at the card or livedrive ones ?

Thanks for your response Gryfon. I plugged the Microphone into the "Mic" jack on the Live! drive. I, essentially, have nothing but my monitor speakers plugged into the jack in the back of the actual sound card. I mainly use headphones for any kind of audio, so I just plug those in the headphone jack on the Live! drive and THEY work perfectly.

The only way the microphone will work is with the Line-in 2 / mic option checked. I will check the software that came with it, though I believe it was just bonus games and such. Has to be something though...

i think i found your problem. after several test, i'm sure the counter strike source is forcing the microphone (ie mic jack on the back of your card) to be the default recording source when running cs source, because if SomeoneJoe select the wrong recording source (wave for example) the mic wouldn't work, and would post questions that shouldn't posted, so they did that on purpose. Try these console command on cs source : voice_forcemicrecord 0 [enter]

just type voice_force then tab, it should show you the right command. By setting the value to 0 you're acknowledge cs source not to force to record from mic, but use whatever recording source you've defined.
Make sure it's saved. Quit your cs source, change the default recording source to mic / linein2, and start cs source again. Make sure voice_forcemicrecord is 0, then try to play some game. The cs source now won't force to use mic 1 again (i hope :p)

try it, and let me know how it does.
