Windows XP upgrade/ Firefox issue

Recently I had a friend upgrade from Windows 98se to Windows XP Pro. After WinXP was done with the upgrade process, he tried to used Mozilla Firefox but it came up as a blank white screen with the words "FileEditViewGoBookmarksToolsHelp" at the top (you can't actually click on any of them as they are all text and it looks like one single word). He said he tried uninstalling and reinstalling Firefox but it still does the same thing. He also said he uninstalled and deleted "everything" in his registry that had to do with Firefox and still the same thing. His IE works fine and we did some searching to see if we could come up with anyone who had the same problem but couldn't find anything. Anyone have any ideas, we are completely stumped. Thanx

Can I suggest doing a clean install of WinXP instead of an upgrade from Win98? Just show it your qualifying previous-version Windows CD when asked.
