Windows XP updates on a CD?

Double Trouble

Elite Member
Perhaps someone can help me with this......

MS keeps releasing patches and updates all the time, so that each time I install XP Pro SP1 for someone, I then have to connect to the 'net and download 70MB worth of updates. That's fine for someone with a broadband connection, but not for someone on dialup. Is there any way to simply 'roll up' every available update since SP1 onto a CD such that I can pop in the CD and update the installation in one shot?

Is there any way to "capture" the updates as you download them from the windows update site so that the next time you need to install them you don't have to download them over again?

Any info would be appreciated 🙂

there should be a directory called msdownload.tmp in your windows folder (hidden usually) where ms stores the files...but deletes them after install :/

You'll have to download the again but then you can burn them to a disc or something....

Go to the Windows Update web site.
In the left pane, under Other Options, select ?Personalize Windows Update?.
Under ?Set Options for Windows Update?, select the checkbox for ?Display the Link to Windows Update Catalog under ?See Also??, then click ?Save Settings?.
Go back to the Windows Update web site.
In the left pane, under ?See Also?, select ?Windows Update Catalog?.
Select ?Find Updates for Microsoft Operating Systems?.
Select the operating system and language of your choice.
Select ?Critical Updates and Service Packs?.
Select all of the patches you?d like to download, then click on ?Go to download basket? to download them

You can go here to the Windows Corporate Update site - the name of the game is download so local administrators can apply the same changes to several machines. The downloads can easily be burned to a CDR.

Where's Windows XP SERVICE PACK 1 on that list?

You can slipstream SP1 into your XP CD and create a bootable XP installation CD with SP1 already on it. This page describes how to do it.

This doesn't solve the issue of integrating post-SP1 hotfixes, which is what the original poster described.

I made a slipstreamed XP/SP1 CD ROM by using those directions... with it, do I have to do a clean install though? I just wanted to update my current Windows XP to SP1. With this CD I just made, isn't it only for new installs not for updating my current XP?

Right, the slipstream is for new installs. To update your existing XP installation, you can use the network (admin) install. Sorry I misunderstood your original question.
