Windows XP Update Problems

I have six computers on my home network. Three are running XP Pro SP2 and three are running XP MCE 2005. All are behind a hardware firewall, all are running TrendMicro Internet Security 2007.

I do not have automatic updates turned on for Windows, I do it manually once a week (usually on Saturday) so that I can check around and be reasonably sure that Microsoft has not screwed something up with their latest updates. So I go to do my normal update routine on all the computers and...

First Problem - fixed?: Get error message saying that "automatic updates must be turned on to retrieve updates"

Did that...

Second Problem -fixed?: Now Windows Update runs and runs at 100% CPU usage and finally locks computers...

Found KB Article ID 932494 which seemed to fix the problem.

Third Problem: All six computers received from 0 to 18 updates. Now this is odd seeing that previously they had all the same updates and should need all of the latest updates.

Any idea how to force Windows Update to reset itself so that it downloads all the update?

Forth Problem: On two of the six computers Windows Update installed CAPICOM and a patch (KB931906) for it. When I look up CAPICOM on Microsoft's site it does not even apply to any version of Windows XP and I do nothing now or in the past that would have required it (I am user, not a developer).

Any ideas why this was installed on two computers and not on the other four?

Thanks...

Hotfixes 916089 and 927891 were both part of 932494.

I do appreciate you mentioning it, and I should have mentioned that I applied both of the hotfixes in my original post.
