Windows XP Ultimate

Anyone heard of it? It's some hack of XP Pro to look like Vista or something I guess. Anyway, this guy I know brings this computer his son-in-law or whoever built. He never liked the guy, and told me he never liked this computer either. It boots so slow. And Login takes forever or doesn't work at all.

I Googled XP Ultimate and went to the page, and AVG popped up with a warning. Nice. Should I even bother trying to clean this thing up or find him a copy of XP and do a clean install?

EDIT: Thanks for moving mods.

Never heard of it. It sounds like a theme package. Some of them were kind of nice, but would cause issues. Slow boot isn't generally an issue though. I'd try to clean it up via the usual means, and see what happens.

If you are going to have to buy XP or pay for a disk, consider just getting Win7. It's worked well on a couple of older PCs with messed-up installations of XP Windows Media Center Edition.

Out of curiosity I tried it few years ago.

It looks nice like Vista and it does not change anything else in the OS (runs the same speed as before).

Thus this issue per-se has nothing to do with the OP dilemma.

If the computer is at least P-4 with 512MB or more it will work well with XP.

I also doubt that the computer will join the owner in his resentment of the other guy. :hmm:

For me XP ultimate would include support for more than 3 1/4 GB of RAM and some other little tweaks. Also all the software I love. In fact I've seen plenty of "make you own Windows Disc" utilities that I'm ashamed I havent tried them yet. I hate having to install all my apps over again. They take much longer than Windows.
