Windows XP Task Bar?

I thought that each application would store the open windows in one button (if that makes sense)

I've seen screeshots like that. How do I set that up?
 
Right click on the start bar, click properties, then tick "Group similar taskbar buttons". Hope that helped.

Normally it takes about 10 open windows of the same application to "group up". You can modify the number of Windows required before grouping occurs with TweakUI for WinXP.
