I seem to be having a problem with Svchost.exe .... It has recently begun to hog up 97 -99 percent of CPU cycles in the backround and is draggging my computer speed and response rate down to the level of a pentium 166 mhz ....

I realize that a lot goes on back there but this situation only recently happened? Is there any way to troubleshoot it? Maybe get in there thru regedit or some other means to see if there is a rogue program is stealing cycles or worse information from my machine....

For now, I have been ending the process through task manager .. and that seems to fix the issue until the next restart. Am I causing an damage to my OS or PC by doing this?

Can anyone recommend any advice or a program that might work?

Any help would be great?

THanks in advance!!!!

svchost is a 'housing' process for one or more services running on the machine. Next time go into the services applet and turn off services until you track down which one is causing the CPU hit. Hopefully once we know what service it is, we can have some better guesses as to why...
