Here's a log as some have requested. See anything untoward or that could/should be deleted? My system is very slow to boot and then fairly slow to become stable and usable even after I log in. Lots of hard drive activity. Once it all loads in and the disk light goes off, it runs great.

And for the record, my specs:

ECS 755-A2
Athlon 64 3200
1 gb pc 3200 (2x512mb sticks)
MSI-branded 6800GT 256 mb
Two 80 gigabyte hard drives, one SATA, one EIDE 133 (I think). SATA is the C: drive with my windows directory.
Oboard sound.
Onboard LAN.

I have run antivirus and anti-spyware scans, which have come up nil. Any help you might offer would be greatly appreciated.

The first thing that jumps out is Norton... it is widely accepted that that program suite is SLOW BLOATWARE....id look inot a different virus scanner. That would DEFENITLY make anoticable difference, but maybe not solve hte extreme problems that you are having..

also, copy and paste you HJT log file here http://www.hijackthis.de/en

Each one of these is unnecessary and can be removed. My favorite removal too is the Spybot utility, but you can use msconfig to turn these off on startup. Some of them can be shut off on start up by going to their individual options/customize menu and looking for the "startup" button.

What this?

This is at least a start.

Any time the system is not performing properly it is important to determine if it is a hardware or software issue. If software, it is then important to scan for viruses and spyware in Safe Mode. These links may help if you have not found them already.

You may have a bad sector somewhere near or on the boot files for Windows. I have a client's Dell PC here beside me that's running Spinrite (4 hours done, 2 to go...), as it has three or four bad sectors at the start of the drive.

The machine boots fine (weirdly enough), but it extremely slow until bootup has finished. Hard disk light remains on throughout, as it attempts to read the bad parts of the disk.

I'd look at checking it out with the manufacturer's testing software to make sure it's okay; make sure to select the Full test of the program, which will scan the entire area of the disk instead of small patches.
