Windows XP Starts with Mouse Cursor but Black/Blank Screen

I have a HP Laptop DV2317


quick specs

Screen 14.1" WXGA
Memory Size 1GB DDR2
Hard Disk 160GB
Optical Drive DVD Super Multi
Graphics Card Intel GMA950
Video Memory Shared memory


I took out vista and have been using XP for about few months.
Everything is nice and smooth.

i turned on the comp this morning, Windows loads and the log in screen with my 2 users propagate without a hitch.

The windows screen then comes on and the screen is blank. the mouse cursor is there and the Task Manager Comes up with alt+ctr+del but the desktop is just BLACK.
Same thing happens in the safe mode. I log back off using the task manager and the user log in screen propagates PERFECTLY. Its just when i go into windows everything is black.

Any known issues? Any help? Remedies?

Backup with linux disc and reformat.

Boot off your XP disc and go to the Recovery Console and try a fixboot and/or fixmbr

My dell did something similar when I tried Win7 beta the first time.

What I had to do was push the FN and F8 keys....Toggles screen to external monitor.

See if your lappy has a similar key config and try it as it may work?
