I like the opening comment on Microsoft's site..."Programs that may behave differently in Windows XP Service Pack 2". I'd bet there is at least one of these programs on 90% of the PC's in the world.

"May behave differently" != "screws up"

I have a number of the programs on that list and they work fine after installing SP2. As fisher mentioned, most issues can be resolved with some simple firewall tweaks. Worst case scenario, you have to uninstall SP2, which many people on this forum have said is easy to to.

It's absolutely foolish to be running a home computer with XP connected to the internet and NOT install SP2.

Microsoft stated that most of the problems are associated with the new built-in Windows firewall, where users must approve programs that attempt to make Internet connections. However, some programs use data pages that the firewall automatically blocks, as they are common attack routes for hackers. A work-around is built into the firewall software, as well as the ability for advanced users to simply turn it off.

The simple answer for most people is to use a third party firewall and just disable the XP one,I prefer to use my Kerio personal firewall rather then the XP one,as we all know there`re lots of better free firewalls out there.

I know one thing,UT,UT2003 and all my other games work great with SP2 and my Kerio personal firewall ;).

If they don't give any specifics on what is different, then to me it might as well be busted.

It's absolutely foolish to be running a home computer with XP connected to the internet and NOT install SP2.

Why foolish? I have no urge to install SP2. I don't worry about viruses and hackers right now because I have my own dedicated Smoothwall firewall running. Now as for some of my relatives and such, well, yes, they would be foolish to not install it...

If I do get around to installing SP2, the first thing I'll be doing is turning OFF that stupid Microsoft firewall...

What a bunch of FUD. The bash sp2 bandwagon is coming to town, everyone jump on!!! Weeeeee!!!!

Of course it's going to affect things. You're installing a firewall. Unless you are some sort of retard you'll open the proper ports and be on your merry way. I'm running sp2 and having no problems with anything that I own that's on that list.

Right, I have no reason to complain, afterall I only spent $149.00 x 3 for it... The real victim here is Microsoft. They didn't mean to make billions off people like me...

How is Microsoft the bad guy in this situation? They invested millions of dollars to write and test SP2 before releasing it for free to Windows users. Service Pack 2 makes significant gains in protecting users from viruses, spyware and malware. Not only that, they are being proactive by warning users of any program that may have the SLIGHTEST issue interacting with SP2's new firewall and networking code.

Your post states that "at least one of these programs on 90% of the PC's in the world." Have you even tried installing SP2? Like I said, I have had no trouble at all with the service pack, and I have more than a few of those programs listed installed on my PC.

You have every right to complain if you install SP2, it breaks one or more of your programs, and you are unable to properly reconfigure your system to get it working. But let's not start spreading rumors and misinformation in an effort to scare people away from installing this update.

Yes, it can be uninstalled quite easily. It also gets free support from Microsoft. People act like if it breaks something that Microsoft is going to give you a big Nelson HA-HA and leave you out in the cold. They won't. They'll stand by the service pack and give you support if it breaks something. You are a paying customer after all right? I think some people have gotten used to the support (or lack thereof) that they get with a free linux distro.

Ideally if you are worried about SP2 just Ghost your entire drive to a blank hard drive. Then install SP2 and try all of your programs. If something is messed up and you can't fix it, just Ghost back over from the backup.

I got XP Pro free from my school, and a bunch of other MS software through some MSDNAA thing, so I'll probably be upgrading from 2000 Pro Sp4 to XP soon. Just wish I had another hard drive in my dorm to backup to =(

Well, actually, no, they don't. I'm not sure what is going on, but when I installed SP2, the patcher for EverQuest and the Launchpad for Star Wars Galaxies both were unable to establish a connection. I turned off all firewalls and was still not able to make a connection. I *was* able to play EverQuest if I bypassed the patcher, which I thought was extremely odd. I uninstalled SP2, but I want it and would rather learn what to do to allow these games to work rather than not use it. Please email me if you think you have any useful suggestions.

Yes, especially if you have a wireless network. My neigbor installed SP2 on his machine and it totally fubared his wireless connection. It's hard to get viruses if you can't connect to the internet. After we uninstalled the Netgear wireless utility and disabled the firewall it worked but only sporadically.

We finally did a system restore back to before he installed SP2 and everything works wonderfully again.
