Because it appears as though they also updated drivers and numerous other things. Keep in mind that is the "network" upgrade package - upgrading an individual machine through windows update wouldn't require nearly that much of a download.

I understand that DX9C, Media Player 9, and Movie Maker 2 are included in the service pack. It just seems to large since the usual network service packs installers are much smaller.

SP2 is huge. It has tons of new features in addition to the patches and all. Stuff relating to RPC, IE, Outlook Exp, etc have all been reworked. And the SP even has files to turn TabletPC's to TabletPC 2004 (IIRC).

Actually it's "XP Tablet PC Edition 2005"; and yes there are tons of updates to Tablet PC that are included in the network install.
Will this becaome a part of windows update and any idea when?

Yes, it's already been stated in this thread and others that it will be available on the WU site later this month. Turn on automatic updates and if you still dont have it a month from now than start asking questions. If you want it quicker than go download the network install.
 
Quick question: The install file creates a folder on drive C: when it is run; Is it safe to delete this? It's about 100 MB.

EDIT-It only left the folder on my second computer, there's nothing on the first... Still, is it safe to delete it (its name is a bunch of seemingly random numbers and letters)?
 
yes it's safe to delete; the installer should have removed it when it was cleaning it up (it's a temporary folder where the files are stored when decompressed)
 
This may be a bit early with all the possible problems, but does anyone know how to install it without installing WMP9. I don't really care much about the media player itself but how it changes the IE activeX interface for the good old 6.4 like version. The 9 version sucks, it is slow, has less options, does not show download progress and most importantly cannot skip through streaming or incomplete downloads.

Is there any way to keep WMP8 or at least reinstall the old activeX interface.
 
I've installed it on 3 of my PC's. So far it's 3 for 3 successful installs. I still have one more to go, but I'm going to test the other three before proceeding with my 4th PC. BTW this is how these other three PC's are setup:
1st Laptop= Windows XP Home then upgraded to SP1, SP1a, and now SP2.
2nd Kids PC= Windows XP Home then upgraded to SP1a, and now SP2.
3rd File Server= Windows XP Pro Slipstream SP1a and then upgraded to SP2.
 
I am unable to download SP2. I keep getting the following: "Server has internal error". Anyone else getting this message?
 
What time of the day are you getting this error?

If it's during the day time, try to start the download just before you go to bed. That is if you don't work nights. If you work nights try starting it when you get home in the morning.

I work a crazy shift, I go in at 6PM and work til 3AM. I downloaded mine when I got home, for example, and it only took me 10 minutes. HTH

I have not tried this myself, but I know WMP6 and the old activeX interface is basically msdxm.ocx, so maybe you can try getting the SP1 version of that file.
