As others have said, I wish they would license per user instead of per machine.

One person, one copy, say..5 machines ala Apple. Basically, paying $650 just for OS is hitting my pocket a little hard. Lucikly, it forces me to use alternative OSes like Linux. Which, in turn, increase my knowledge level. Thanks MS!

I actually bought two copies of XP Home. Allthose people who say there is no difference.....BAH! Dynamic Disk Support and DOMAIN access. Two things I need (edit: want) to "increase" my knowledge level.

If there were no pirates, the price would be cheaper.

It's already been cracked way before this post was made. Try around a month or two ago.

Almost guaranteed that someone from the company itself had it cracked and had the cracked version out or the full version with the crack instructions attached to it way before it was even released officially. It always happens with MS Software - fully hacked version available before the official release is available.

This is old news. All you have to do is know which registry keys to change and a new Corporate key.
Been there done that.

Just got the $49 Pro deal through my small business :) Cannot change keys from Corporate to Pro though, that sucks. Had I known that I would have saved the $49 in the first place.

Good. Hopefully that will force a few people to actually purchase the software they use.
Only if Microsoft lowers the damn cost.....
If more people actually purchased it, Microsoft could lower the cost without hurting their bottom line...
It's a neverending cycle.

I guess you missed the point that the nature of the protection against piracy didn't really require the service pack to be finished. When the beta version of the SP was available, it was already figured out and dealt with.

This sucks, If I wanted to register and all that crap I would have downloaded a legal version from my university (which I am entitled to by the way). Is there any way to change the pin number to my legit one without re-installing?

Well said. And your point is even more valid considering that XP can be had for $90 (home) and $139 (pro) from Newegg.

Folks here who spend $300 on a video card that lasts them a year until their next upgrade bitch about a $90 OS that lasts them 3 years or so.

This is true, however (currently) it's not possible for someone to download/trade/copy a video card! :)

Cheers!

Yes and no. If you are downloading the corporate version from your university under a licence, then yes. If you are getting Pro or Home from them (and not the corporate version of pro) then no. Search google for the procedure, it's really quite easy.

Apparently not.

(1) When XP SP1 installation is attempted, SP1 will not load with previous ?well known? pirated product keys, and will further verify the product key against a current product key list

if you think of all the stuff you get with windows (browser, media player, etc...), its actually quite a bargain. the price of two computer games for an entire OS... some of you guys are just plain cheap.

Damn! Finally, a post that makes sense!

Folks, the desktop OS has grown in features and capability over the years by leaps and bounds. With MS operating systems, you can easily perform tasks that were simply unimagined a few years ago. Think of all the time you spend at your computer, and all the functionality that the OS gives you. Think of all the things you do at your computer. Do your really, honestly, believe that that functionality is overpriced at $200?

For all the things MS OSes let me do, I'd honestly say that the value of the software to me is probably in the thousands of dollars range. Granted, I don't have thousands of dollars, and given a choice I'd use a less capable OS than spend thousands of dollars on MS OSes, but man oh man! The things that XP lets me do! Two hundred bucks is a BARGAIN for this software!

MS OSes cost too much for your business? Examine the productivity and the revenue your company generates from using these OSes. Can you honestly say that the money isn't worth it?

You say your company is forced to use MS OSes? Hogwash! Your company made a business decision to use MS products due to business needs. You CAN use other OSes. You can get or write custom business apps for Linux. But for many companies, it's cheaper in the long run to use MS OSes and buy shrinkwrapped software than to do that. So MS software is cheaper than the alternatives. Maybe it costs more than you'd like, but it's still cheaper than the alternatives.

Yes, I've pirated software in the past, even MS OSes. But I couldn't tell you that MS OSes are overpriced and keep a straight face. Given the features and capabilities of MS OSes, I think they're dirt cheap.

It amazes me that someone will spend $20, $30, $50, whatver on a dinner that lasts 30 minues, but claim that an OS that provides years of functionality and productivity is overpriced at $200.

Get real.

I agree 100%. Great post.

Just sell me a stripped down os with out the extra stuff and I'll be happy :p

I'd buy a completely customized Windows that only has what I want and is priced accordingly. Some stuff in any Windows I just don't need at all.

So when does this hellspawn service pack come out?
Probably take them so long to release it that they'll have their next os out by then. :p

I will not pay for Windows until there is an alternative to it that runs all the windows based applications. I am all for consumers chosing products and paying for them. But there must be a choice involved. I will not pay a tax to microsoft to run non-microsoft applications that are only available for windows. They will not get a penny out of me as a result of their illegal monopoly. It's one thing to buy windows because you like windows. It's another thing to buy windows because you have to to run your applications.
