A little clarification. From Neowin:

When released, Service Pack 1 for Microsoft Windows XP will not install if it identifies the underlying Windows XP installation as a known pirated installation. SP1 identifies known pirated installations by their Product IDs. The Product ID is generated from the Product Key used during install and can be found by choosing My Computer, then Properties, and viewing the General tab.

SP1 will not install on installations with the following product IDs containing the following serial numbers (note that X takes the place of any other value): XXXXX-640-0000356-23XXX, & XXXXX-640-2001765-23XXX. Users of licensed Microsoft software will be unaffected. If SP1 is installed on a Windows XP installation with one of the above product IDs, SP1 installation will fail and error with the following message: Service Pack 1 Setup Error: The product key used to install Windows is invalid.

Good. Hopefully that will force a few people to actually purchase the software they use.

That is doubtful. It will be "fixed", just like XP was.

Only if Microsoft lowers the damn cost.....
If more people actually purchased it, Microsoft could lower the cost without hurting their bottom line...

Don't bet it on it. Less people pirate, they'll keep the price the same.

Why should they lower the cost? Should they just give it to you for free? Go steal a car then tell the cops when you get caught, that the car maker wanted too much so you just took it. :)

BMW's are expensive. Does that mean that we should all go steal BMW's?

In a few days you'll probably post another thread saying how SP1 has been cracked/hacked....

I wonder why MS even tries? They should know its pretty useless.

No, and that is a totally different scenario. There are other cars that will get you from Point A to Point B. However in the OS world if you want to run 99.9% of the business apps and games out there you MUST use one flavor or another of Windows.

Just as you can by another car, you can also buy another version of Windows. You can buy Windows XP Home, Windows 98, Windows ME, and Windows 2000 Pro if you have to have compatibility. And each one is less expensive than WinXP Pro last time I checked. If you want to go even cheaper, get Linux and use one of the Windows emulators.

So I don't see your point. If you're not willing to pay up, shut up or get something else:D

I'm talking about the business world here. Try switching from Windows or try staying with an older version and see what happens.

1. Most business software products are developed for Windows.
2. MS drops support for a product you are screwed unless you upgrade.

Now keep in mind that I'm a Net Admin at a company with almost 100 MS based servers and 4000+ users.

It stops the dumb people though, so it's worth it somewhat.

So why do you need to run 99.9% of the business apps and games? There is nothing in the Constitution that says you have the right to run 99.9% of the business apps and games. No one is under any obligation to give you anything or produce any software for you to use if you want to play pay. How would you feel if you worked for hours making lemonade for your lemonade stand and I just walked up and drank it all. :)

If you're a business, you will upgrade using legal copies of Windows in the first place so what's the problem?

The only way this Service Pack would affect businesses is if they loaded a crapload of illegal versions of Windows XP. Hell, our university still uses Windows NT 4.0 workstations in some labs. We use Windows 2000 in the newer labs. We won't switch to XP for a while.

Wow, I'd seriously watch out if I were you. Even a post that somewhat supports piracy can give your company a cause to fire you. (As well as give Microsoft cause to sue your company). By the way, have you asked Microsoft for a group discount? They are quite flexible with prices when you want it in bulk. For example were I work we pay $100,000 per year and can install any Microsoft product on any number of computers. If you upgrade 4000+ users computers at $25 each then the $100,000 deal is cheaper...

Of course we only use legal copies of the software. The problem is that MS still charges far too much to be part of their Enterprise Licensing Program or whatever they call it these days. They know they have you over a barrel because you must upgrade and pay their cost or lose support. THAT is the problem.

The amount we pay is MUCH higher than that. Plus it only covers base versions of the software like Win2k Pro & Win2k server for example. You want to install Advanced Server or DataCenter Server and it's an extra charge. Same goes for SQL, Office, etc, etc, etc......

I am not advocating piracy nor do I practice it at work or at home. The software I own is all legal. My problem still remains that MS has people by the balls and they know it and rape us without even the courtesy of a reach around.

Then stick with an older version of Windows like Windows 2000. There is absolutely NOTHING wrong with 2000 and will do just about everything that XP Pro does. Like I said, we use Windows NT 4.0 on some of our universtity lab computers and they are just fine.
