Windows xp sp1 fails to install or repair

Circumstances required that I repaired my windows os. The repair failed to fix the problem (explorer.exe constantly stopping and restarting every 5 seconds - explorer.exe also fails in safemode)

Now - when trying to install windows to a new directory to run from that OS so I can easily get mt data off of the harddrive - the windows installation procedure freezes at the 34 minutes to go bar, while installing devices.

some other web searches have led me to believe that some device has failed - but how can I fix it - or even know which one it is?

The only problems I know with my computer is the internal wireless lan card which every 2 minutes gives me 2 minutes up 800-1600ms pings but still works. The only problem that ever did register in the device manager was the internal ethernet card and that just does not work, so I use a pcmia ethernet connection for this lap top.

What are my options? would a full hd format and install work?

Grab your data by attaching the drive to another computer, either as a secondary internal drive or in an external drive housing. Then re-format the hard drive and install Windows XP.

This is just an update for anyone else having this problem. My laptop had a hardware failure on the motherboard, the LAN. And Windows would not install or repair because of this. I needed to swap the hard drive with another laptop and reinstall windows.
