windows XP slow down after playing CS

Hi, I have windows XP running on an asus P4S333 w/P4 1.6@2350, 256MB samsung PC2700 and WD 80G SE. The CPU stays at 43 degrees and the motherboard at 32 while I'm playing. While not under load the temps are 40 & 30 respectively. I notice that after playing Counterstrike my computer is noticeably slower until I reboot. Any ideas why this is happening?

Thanks.

Did you check for any lingering processes running under task manager? Maybe you have punkbuster or similar and it doesn't exit out correctly.

I tried the ram cleaner and it's almost like the oposite is happening. I downloaded cyberlat ram cleaner and I get the following results:

start-up 110MB ram used
Idling 100MB ram used
right after playing CS 70MB ram used

if I leave it sitting for 10-15 minutes the ram usage slowly climbs to 100MB and then the computer seems to run fine. I keep fogetting to check my task manager right after I play so I still have to see what's going on in there.

On your task bar, right click & select Task Manager, (Or press C-A-D & select Task Manager). Select the second tab, processes, and then click on the CPU heading to sort your processes by CPU usage. Click it again to reverse the sort order. This will show you who is using your CPU, and whether you have some stray or orphaned process taking your CPU cycles. It's also handy to use this if Internet Explorer is acting really wierd. I have had some extra "hidden" iexplore.exe processes hanging around even though there are no screens for them.

I know all about the task manager. It shows system idle process at 98-99% right after I finish the game. It's weird. This happened in the past too. When I re-install XP the computer will run fine for a few weeks and then this sort of stuff will start to happen again.

Well,

Have you tried taking a task list snapshot before & after playing CS to see if any stray processes are running? You might also look at the next page to see what your memory usage is doing. If you are particularly slow, then I would guess that you are running into virtual memory/swap, and you are slowing down because you are now doing a bit of swapping. Maybe some spare process is using a lot of memory. There is a way to make Task Manager show how much memory each process is using, and to sort by memory usage. Maybe some memory intensive process/driver is being loaded but not being released in anticipation of playing again, and "speeding" up the second and subsequent loading of the game?

I don't think you quite understand what is happenning. I'm not trying to play the game again and it's slowing down, the whole computer seems "slow" after I play the game. If I try to load up anything right after I finish with the game it takesa a long time to load. I will do the screenshot thing and see if that shows anything. Also, my memory useage drops significantly when I finish the game, to a point much lower than when the computer is initially started. Refer to the values that I listed above.

I do appreciate your help, thanks!

when you exit CS, use ESC to get to the menu screen, then click disconnect and wait for it to be acknowledged. (I think the choice changes to connect (anyway, it is obvious). now that you are disconnected from the server, exit the game to windows.

(It sounds like the server is still trying to negotiate a connection with you because it hasn't figured out you have left and for some reason your comp. is wasting resources "listening" to it.)

Sorry for the layman's description, but ..... I'm a layman 🙂
