Windows XP Service Packs

Hey guys,

I have another OEM XP laptop that I have done a fresh XP install on. I am aware that Microsoft no longer supports XP. When going to windowsupdate.microsoft to try and download the service packs, I am now being directed to kb/2497281. After following the instructions, windows update is still not downloading said service packs.

Any ideas on how to update my machine to the last service pack?

Thanks in advance for any/all help with my issue.

I had the same problem using windows update on a fresh install, and I did have sp3 installed, as well as IE8
I left the PC overnight on automatic update setting set to about an hour ahead of the current time and the next day windows updates worked fine and I wasnt directed to that KB article.

Windows Update should do it automatically. I installed service packs on a new install of XP Pro two days ago using the regular Windows Update process...

Or are you trying to download the "distribution" version so that you can store it and/or slipstream it into the install CD for future use? If so, use this link: http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=24

Thanks for the link Fardringle. No, I actually did the fresh install and immediately went to windowsupdate.microsoft and got the KB article. Very strange. The laptop is an older gateway laptop using the XP installation disk. I'm downloading the SP3 right now and will be giving it a go. Again, it's very strange but then, it's Microsoft.

Thanks for the help gentlemen. I will post an update once I give the SP3 a whirl.

I installed SP2 from the link which then snapped windowsupdate back to order. All is good now. Thanks for the link - it got me squared away.:thumbsup:
