In addition, your computer must at least be running Windows XP with Service Pack 1 installed.
We recommended that you have Service Pack 2 installed before installing SP3.

So are we to take that to mean that SP3 is not a complete
roll up of all updates to date, like SP2 was as it included
everything in SP1, just like SP1 had all the updates that
came before it. Kinda odd why they insist on SP1 already
being in place. You would expect to take a clean XP cd
with no SP in it and be able to slipstream SP3 into it.
Apparently you now need to do this with a windows XP
cd that already has SP1 or SP2 already integrated.

Here's a warning to those planning on making a XP SP3 slipstream CD. Someone on another forum did a test where they slipstreamed SP3 using a SP0/Gold CD then compared the files to a slipstream CD made by integrating SP2 first then SP3. The former CD had some files that were older than the SP2+SP3 CD. I guess that's why Microsoft says you need to have either SP1 or SP2 installed before you install SP3. They didn't include some files in SP3 that were updated in SP1.

To make a SP3 slipstream CD you should integrate SP2 first then SP3.

Let me get this right... if you do a clean install of XP + SP2 + SP3 you won't get IE7 and WMP11 ?
 
NicColt, no you won't get IE7 or WMP11. You'll still have IE6 & WMP9 after installing SP3. You'll need to upgrade to IE7 and WMP11 after that if you want them.

I had problems last night installing SP3. It downloaded okay and started to install okay but when it got to the end of the installation I got an hourglass and it just hung there. It was on the last step of the installation where it said, "Finishing installation, preparing processes after install"...and then it stopped. I let it sit for an hour like this and nothing worked. CTRL-ALT-DEL didn't do anything, couldn't open any applications, just completely frozen.

I finally did a hard reboot and (luckily) it automatically reverted back to SP2. I did a disk check and defragged and so far everything seems okay. I'm not going to mess with SP3 for awhile though...there are clearly some installation issues if you search some of the PC boards out there... 🙁
 
My main rig already has IE7 .. but WMP11 they can keep.
Also, a quick question on .net 3 which is one of the windows
updates ... If I decided to install it (big file 70 or so MB)
do I leave any existing .net versions in place or will it just
update everything to .net 3 ? ? Or do I uninstall the old
ones first ? ? MS never did make that clear.
 
I'm having SP3 issues. It seems to install fine, prompts me to reboot, windows loads, etc. But towards the end of my Windows startup my Zone Alarm firewall/antivirus security suite starts up and hangs the system. A ZA alert pops up asking me to approve access for tlnt.svr, but the ZA window where I would click "approve" is unresponsive. If I ctrl-alt-del the system to shut down ZA, the task manager appears, but all of its buttons are unresponsive (i.e. I'll try to select a task, or something, and the window will say "not responding"). If I try to shut down the system it just hangs indefinitely. I can still move the mouse after hitting shut down, but any time I try to start a program after that point I get a system error saying the program can't load because Windows is shutting down.

I did manage to start Windows in Safe Mode and disable zone alarm. Then, when booting normally, Windows worked just fine. However, when I manually loaded zone alarm, the above problem repeated itself. I've browsed around for ZA/SP3 compatibility issues, but have found nothing (I have the lastest ZA, supposedly SP3 compatible), so for now I'm restoring to SP2, and am going to hold off on SP3 until I can find more information about this issue.
 
ive not had to enter my product key..

did notice the file size was only about 68mb

that cant be right, i thought SP3 was 330+mb?
 
The whole SP3 ISO is more like 544MB ... but if your system is fairly up to date
and you do it via the update site, the actual amount needed to bring the pc up
to SP3 may be quite a bit less. Also, I heard elsewhere, that you can not uninstall
IE7 or the IE8 Beta after SP3 has been installed. They need to be installed after
SP3 is installed in order to be Uninstallable later on. Rather an odd idea on MS part.

I think only the ISO's are that big. They probably include SP2 or something.

If you have IE6 and install SP3, you still have IE6. You can then install IE7 and still have it removable.

If you have IE7 and install SP3, you still have IE7, but now it is no longer removable.

This is explained in the IE Blog.

Each of the .Net versions co-exist with all the others.
These are: .Net 1.0, .Net 2.0, .Net 3.0, & .Net 3.5, plus several updates for .Net 1.0 and .Net 2.0.
None of the .Net versions are included in XP SP3.
Blame this disarray on Microsoft's famous "Backward compatibility".
 
I think you meant Win2000 Pro ..That was one of the best and
very stable .. still used by lots of people
