Funny, I know they legally have to support it, but I can see them pushing it as far back as possible since they have already "announced" that Windows XP is for the most part end-of-lifed. I don't have the link to the article, but I know they've said it.

We are in dire need of SP3...a fresh install of XP SP2 requires hundreds of hotfixes and assorted downloads (about 150 I believe if one counts IE7, WMP11 and the .net updates) before it's fully patched :(

It's almost like patching an MMO if you haven't played in like a year.

i know what you mean regaurdless of how fast we can do it i feel its stupid we are almost pushed to do these before we can safly use are pc's. i would just like to install windows and put on my software and then were done.

They might be pushing it back far enough that they have time to put something really cool into it. With SP2, I believe they recompiled everything to reduce attack surface as much as they could. Maybe SP3 will include basic sandboxing tech where apps can be deprived of Admin-level powers, thus helping to contain exploits.

That's probably wishful thinking on my part, of course :eek:

Hehehe, you'll have to pry XP from my cold, dead, fingers! :D Hopefully SP3 is good if/when it gets here. Hopefully it's not what SP6 was for NT4.

Meh, I haven't booted into Vista in days, but I guess I'll poke around in it some more later today.

And there's really no good way to integrate most of them into the setup files. Many of them can be, but others can only be run in a shell during setup (preinstall). Autopatcher can be handy, but its weakness is that it basically treats all XP versions and configs the same, whether the patch is for XP Pro or Home, whether or not the patch is applicable to your particular config.

Another year before SP3...damn you, MS!

Yeah, I'm toying with nLite to create a CD that includes most hotfixes, but so far I've been unsuccesful. They all fail to install all the way, or simply error out at some point. I have to weed out the files I'll have to do manually.

Yeah, I wish that a patch rollup was available, too.

The good news is that SP2, which is pretty commonly available integrated into XP Install CDs, is "good enough" security-wise. So you can install SP2, set the PC to "Automatic Updates" and let it take care of the rest by itself. Assuming that the darned "SVCHOST.EXE" issues are finally fixed so we can start trusting Automatic Updates again. :(

Wouldn't be surprised if XP SP3 becomes like Win2K SP5.

IE: just a minor hotfix rollup.

We shall see.

I'd be perfectly content with a SP3 for XP that was nothing more than a hotfix/update/WMP11/IE7 rollup. XP with all those things is all the OS I want and need at this point.

I have 4 XP Licenses and it works fine for me. I can't see tossing them away.

Agreed. Don't need or want any new features. Just a big .exe file I can download once, keep in my iPod, double click on a fresh install and voila.

Why not just make an XP install CD with SP3 integrated into it? I did that with SP1 and SP2 and it's very convenient. Of course you could have it both ways for the SP2 PCs that you support for friends/family/businesses, too.

Will MS just keep delaying SP3 untill they just scrapXP support altogether? Dont they only support an OS for aprox 7-8yrs then its end of life anyways?

Try http://www.ryanvm.net/msfn/ . I periodically update my SP2 XP install disk. Ryan has a utility to slip stream all current updates and he's collected the updates. Works well for me and eliminates a lot of time downloading updates after install. It's currently updated to 13 May 07.

Same here, I just use nLite to make a new CD when it's time for a new install somewhere, and integrate Ryan's latest pack into it.

Not going to happen... The compatibility testing alone would prevent that from happening. You want those features, get Vista, thats the roadmap now.
