did you get this service pack from microsoft? if not, it's seems pretty dumb to install it on your system...considering it is probably a beta...

That's why God invented Drive Image, extra HDDs and mobile racks. Make a dulpicate image of your working OS on an extra drive, install the sp1 beta, play with it, if it hoses something, who cares. 6-7 minutes later you're ready to go again with a fresh image.

What's with all these people thinking the end of the wrold may occur if you install these??????

Of course you don't if you don't have a backup made or imaged, or if you have critical data on the system, but damn.............even if it does crash and burn, like the poster above said, what's it take..........10 minutes and you're back up??????

That's the whole point of using beta software. It is implied that if you play with beta software than the vendor will not provide any support for it, that would make it exactly the same as freeware.

The file size of this build is 130,601,560 and it was built on July 19, 2002, meaning that this build is only 6 days old. The only two programs that have been updated in this build are Internet Explorer and Outlook Express. This is the first relesae of XP SP1 where Outlook Express is updated to it's corresponding build number. Supposedly, previous builds of this service pack left out the build number in Outlook Express to stop Beta Testers from tracking Microsoft employees' build versions while posting in the Beta newsgroups.

If the only 2 things that are updated are IE and Outlook express than I'm going to quit wasting my time on this, I've spent the better part of the last hour trying to find a place to DL it without any luck. Scrap this project...

What's the official MS release date on this? Will we have to download it (I only have a modem connection) or will it be available on CD-ROM?

1) I'm not aware of any official release date.
2) They have made service packs available on CD in the past so it's quite possible that they will again.

I have heard (I can't remember where though) that SP1 will be available on CDROM after it is released as a download. Sorry I couldn't be more help.

The FTP works, use passive transfers if you're behind a firewall
and everything MS said about the cd-key change isn't real so
bootlegers are free at the moment
