I am running Windows XP Professional SP1, and my scanner is a Canon Canoscan 1240U. I checked the MS website and it is XP compatible. I installed the latest drivers (TWAIN) from Cannon and using 3rd party software it works just fine.

I have the WIA service enabled (Automatic) and it does initialize my scanner at start up. However when I open up the "Scanner and Camera Wizard" my scanner does not show up there.

Do you guys have any suggestions?

Thanks in advance/

Did you have the scanner disconnected from the USB port when you
installed the drivers?

If you install the scanner drivers with it connected to the PC, it generally will not
show in the "Scanner and Camera Wizard".

Thanks for responding.

Actually I emailed Canon Tech support and they advised me that 2 types of drivers are available. TWAIN, which is the one I was using and WIA. The twain driver doesn't support the Windows XP wizards. To make a long story short, I installed the WIA drivers and everything including the buttons on the scanner work perfectly.
