Windows XP registry permissions errors.

When I try to install programs they get errors saying access denied. I tried going to permissions in the registry and adding the administrators group and then telling all the sub keys to inherit the permisions, then it says it can't do it. Is there a program that can go in and force the correct permissions on the registry or is the only thing that can do it a repair install?

It seems to me that the administrator account, or any account in that group, would have permission to every key anyway. Are you trying to install from a limited rights account?

Not if someone or some app modified the permissions, ownership would have to be taken just like with the file system.

I tried taking ownership and that didn't work either. However I found out that it was adware/spyware that was causing it, most likely newdotnet adware. Once I removed that junk it installed fine.

Try this to reset Registry permission back to the Default.
Open command prompt and type the follwing (all in 1 line):
Secedit /configure /cfg %windir%\repair\secsetup.inf /db secsetup.sdb /verbose /areas REGKEYS

Thanks for the reply, I will have to try that.

Also I thought it was addware or spyware and it seemed that I was able to install AVG after removing it but I went back into the registry and I still had issues accessesing some keys.
