Windows Xp recognizing only 2 gig of 4 gigs memory

Hey, am I just missing a setting or something on the bios on this one? I've got 4 gigs of DDR2 1066 in an Asus p5KPL-CM mobo with XP. It's not the OS limitation deal as it only sees 2 and not the standard 3. Why is my system just recognizing 2 gigs. So far I've swapped sticks in the slots, and tried to force it to recognize in the MSconfig->boot.ini->advanced options. No go. It even recognizes 1 gig per stick/slot on CPUz. This has to be just a bios thing or something right? LMK. Thanks.
 
How much memory shows up at boot after POST, 4GB?

It's theoretically possible to have 2GB of address space allocated to devices if you have alot of cards installed, but I'd first check 4GB is being detected by the BIOS.
 

Nope, only 2 gigs recognized from the start, 2096 megs or whatever it is. I just flashed the Bios too a few minutes ago. To no avail.
 
I'm guessing you have either a faulty module or slot, you could try testing the modules one at a time in the first slot. If they all work then try one module, in the other slots to find your faulty slot.
 
Well you think a slot would be the issue when I switched sticks and CPUz is telling me 1 gig is recognized per slot?

Update, I just did each stick in each slot and they are both (by themselves) reading 1024 megs. This has to be a setting thing, does it not?
 
I don't know for sure, I wasn't there when you switched 😉 I'm guessing CPUz is showing four populated slots?
Maybe the BIOS has detected the RAM but marked it as bad, regardless, there's no substitute for testing.
 

Thanks for your replies. Either stick in either slot reads 1 gig. FYI, these sticks were fine @ 2 gigs apiece on a prior system.
 
If the modules all run fine on their own then it's something to do with the board, if running one module in each of the slots is also fine then it could be a fault with the board or a configuration issue in the BIOS I'm not familiar with. Presumably you've reset the CMOS?

They're not fine on their own. Each one reads at 1 gig in either slot (they are 2 gig sticks - 2 x 2 gig). Its got to be a config thing, no? This is a brand new board...
 
It sounded like you had 4x1GB but looking up the board, it only has two slots. If the modules are detected as 2GB each in another system but 1GB each on this board then you've either got an incompatibility problem or a faulty board I guess. What is the make and model of the modules?
 
I owe you an apology. Getting kind of short here because this build has given me nothing but problems - but cross this one off the list. These are 2 x 1 gb sticks. I confused them with another set. Boy that was alot of negative energy for my own stupidity. Thanks for taking the time to respond 😀
