windows xp reboots at splash screen

windows xp reboots at splash screen, its not a heat or power supply or hardware problem. I ruled them all out. Maybe registry problem? I remeber in windows 98 you could rename the config and some other file and then it solved this problem.

This install of windows has been good for about 8 months, before i rebooted yesterday it had not been rebooted in about 6 months.

how do i fix this?

any ideas?

thanks

How have you ruled out a hardware problem? Have you tried rebooting in safe mode? Last known good configuration?

Windows XP automatically reboots on a blue screen by default. This definitely sounds like a driver or hardware issue.

How did you rule out the power supply? I think the power supply is the hardware item most likely to be affected during a six month period of no use.

What I would do is :
try to reach safe mode or load last known good as MrChad recommends,
if that doesn't work, reset the CMOS and load default options.
if that doesn't work try re-installing windows.
if that doesn't work try another Power supply and/or swap the RAM.
if that doesn't work swap out other hardware.

I can not boot into safe mode or last know good confgi, it reboots at splash screen.

I ruled out hardware problem because i have been running knoppix 3.4 on it from cd for the last four days with out shutting down. Temps in bios are ok

I will try clearing cmos tonight after work

Right-click on My Computer
Properties
Advanced Tab
Startup and Recovery section - Settings Button
Uncheck Automatically Restart.
OK

still on luck , i can boot to knoppix and run that

if i reinstall xp into the same c:windows folder will my files and programs still work ?

Yes, and for an individual user, that's probably the easiest fix.

If this were a server without a backup, I'd say try this:

Take that Knoppix CD, copy the c:\windows\system32\config files (all of them) into a new folder (like ...\config\backup). Copy the c:\windows\repair files (all of them) into the config folder. Does your system boot? If so, you have an issue in the registry - a registry setting could be wrong or bad. If it does not boot, you probably have an issue with files on your system (corrupt, bad, missing, etc. files).

If the latter (it still just reboots), to find out exactly what the holdup is, you could use Knoppix CD to copy the System32 files from a working XP installation (just the files! not the folders in there!) from the working install to this one - and then put the original registry back in place. It's likely the system will now boot.

If not, there's still a lot you can do - change the registry so it will show a blue screen and generate a memory.dmp, so you can look at that and figure out what went wrong, etc...

But that's a lot of work. Most people just do an upgrade-in-place (ie reinstall XP to the same directory) and that fixes things up.
