Yes, and for an individual user, that's probably the easiest fix.
If this were a server without a backup, I'd say try this:
Take that Knoppix CD, copy the c:\windows\system32\config files (all of them) into a new folder (like ...\config\backup). Copy the c:\windows\repair files (all of them) into the config folder. Does your system boot? If so, you have an issue in the registry - a registry setting could be wrong or bad. If it does not boot, you probably have an issue with files on your system (corrupt, bad, missing, etc. files).
If the latter (it still just reboots), to find out exactly what the holdup is, you could use Knoppix CD to copy the System32 files from a working XP installation (just the files! not the folders in there!) from the working install to this one - and then put the original registry back in place. It's likely the system will now boot.
If not, there's still a lot you can do - change the registry so it will show a blue screen and generate a memory.dmp, so you can look at that and figure out what went wrong, etc...
But that's a lot of work. Most people just do an upgrade-in-place (ie reinstall XP to the same directory) and that fixes things up.
