windows xp question

if i have a copy of xp upgrade and im building a new comp...cant i install like windows me on new comp...then call microsoft and get another product key and use the same cds i used before...if i can this is much cheaper correct?

As long as that Upgrade copy is not running on any other systems, you should be ok doing this.

Also, you don't actually have to install ME first. Boot up from the XP upgrade CD and during the install it will ask you to confirm another OS (ME) by putting it in the CD drive. Once it confirms the old OS, it will continue the install like normal.

i mean the comp i have now has the upgrade on it from me...i thought i could just buy another key for like 60 bucks or sumthing under 100 from microsoft as long as i alrdy have the cds...am i wrong aboutthis?

can i uninstall the upgrade off of this comp and then put it on the new one later?

From a licensing standpoint, these are the rules as posted in the EULA from my copy of XP Pro (eula.txt):
9. UPGRADES. To use Software identified as an upgrade, you
must first be licensed for the software identified by
Microsoft as eligible for the upgrade. After upgrading,
you may no longer use the software that formed the basis
for your upgrade eligibility.

13. SOFTWARE TRANSFER. Internal. You may move the Software
to a different Workstation Computer. After the transfer,
you must completely remove the Software from the former
Workstation Computer. Transfer to Third Party. The
initial user of the Software may make a one-time
permanent transfer of this EULA and Software to another
end user, provided the initial user retains no copies of
the Software. This transfer must include all of the
Software (including all component parts, the media and
printed materials, any upgrades, this EULA, and, if
applicable, the Certificate of Authenticity). The
transfer may not be an indirect transfer, such as a
consignment. Prior to the transfer, the end user
receiving the Software must agree to all the EULA terms
