Windows XP Q's (ipconfig, ping operations; installation)

I've got an onld Pavillion model number...7560C maybe?...that's just begging to be reformated. It's specs are

PIII 450
256MB SDRAM
20GB HDD

I know these meet the min specs set out for XP by MS, but is it a worthwhile upgrade or should I keep it running 98SE (The OS it is currently running). How will XP run on a system like that (it is used for very light gaming, web browsing IM'ing and Office apps). A big concern is drivers, since OEM driver support is, well...t3h suck. I don't have a big problem with using the XP's native drivers for this system because I won't be using it...so. Like I said, is performance going to be a big concern here? Should I or shan't I?

My second question has to do with my current rig...a problem I've never been able to work out, whenever I run ipconfig (or any ping operation) through the command prompt the CMD window opens up, flashes the text (very rapidly) and then closes before I have a chance to read anything. I've never seen anything like this before, is it something I'm doing. (This has lasted through multiple re-installs, including a transition from XPHome to XP-Pro) so I am thinking it has something to do with Drivers or my hardware setup (I've got the A7N8X-Deluxe and use the two integrated NIC's at convenience). Any suggestions as to what might be causing this problem?

Thanks for your time!

Yes, you should be able to run XP just fine on that rig. It will probably be a bit slower than 98, but your stability should improve.

As for the second question, are you typing ipconfig directly in the Start / Run box, or are you typing CMD first then typing ipconfig in the command window?
