Yesterday night, I left my laptop (Lenevo S10e Netbook, less than a month old, WinXP SP3) on and when I came back to it this morning, a couple of changes have happened:
- When I came back this morning, I noticed that my account had been logged off, even though I was sure that I left my account logged in. I shrugged and thought the computer might have restarted overnight or something, maybe the stupid automatic updates.
- I logged into my account to see it going through the proccess of first time log-in. I had the box on the top left of the screen saying that it's doing a few actions to set my user account profile.
- The first thing I noticed when it finally finished the loggin proccess, was my desktop, or rather, the fact that it wasn't mine; The desktop background had reset to a one-color blue, so neither my previous desktop picture, nor the default Lenovo one. A later check verified that all of those settings were deleted, including screensavers settings.
- All my desktop icons were there, but not organised in the way I had organised them: They were all on the left of the screen, minus the recycling bin, on the bottom right.
- My start menu's most used had been reset to default, Internet Explorer had been set as my default browser again, and Run did not have my history. Also, on my Sys-tray, a balloon-popup told me to tour windows XP.
- I tried to start Chrome, to see if it saved the tabs that were open, but Chrome doesn't want to start. There is no chome.exe in task manager.
- I opened firefox, and firefox had saved my tabs, (I use both browsers at the same time usually) and I'm posting from Firefox, but I noticed something weird with my titlebar: it's smaller than it used to be.
- I checked my titlebar with a number of other programs and yes, it is smaller than usual (not that I'm complaining about that, my screen is so small that this is actually helpful)
- I opened Windows Live Messenger, and my username and password had been forgotten, so I entered them manually, but it still wouldn't connect, citing the service being unavalible.
- My documents and firefox settings stayed ok
- My Synaptics mousepad settings had reset
Most of this is an annoyance, but fixable, what I do not know what to do is about the other user accounts:
I tried switching users to figure out if my other family member's accounts were still ok or not, and they just wouldn't log in at all, they would start the animation of their picture to the center of the screen (XP login screen), the screen goes blue-greyish for a second or two, and back to the switch user screen
I don't know what has happened, which is why I've tried to detail it as much as possible in the hopes of someone else understanding it, and how to reverse things to how they were.
