Windows Xp problem

I have this problem with my os, Everytime I start my computer and im on my desktop and I look at my task manager I see that my explorer is about 80 to 90. Its taking up all of my ram , My system idle is about 10 to 20. I have one 512mb ocz gold vk dual channel. The other one burnt up awhile ago. I dont know if that is causing the problem also. Anyone know what to do. I have tried to run a antivirus checker but it came up short. What should I do.

Explorer shouldn't be doing that....if it's really explorer and not some mischeivious process. The process is "explorer.exe"? When you bring up task manager sort the running processes by name, see if you have two "explorer.exe"'s running.

Easiest thing to do is post a HIJACKTHIS log here so we can see what's up.

Having you and I talked about this a little in PM's, it sort of sounds like your WinXP CD is not an authentic one, maybe? If the place you got it from jammed some rootkits in there, your antivirus software will not find the bad stuff because the rootkit is not allowing it to be seen... that's what rootkits do. How many invisible people do you see in your living room? Yeah.

If I am correct, can I suggest you go ahead and get a WinXP OEM at Newegg or somewhere, with Service Pack 2 onboard. You could've been halfway through BF2 by now, instead of fighting invisible malwares. Eh?

Also get a router.
