Windows XP Problem

If anyone could help me with this problem, I would greatly appreciate it.

A friend asked me to work on his computer because it is having problems loading windows. On startup of windows XP, I get a blue screen. Usually I can just run windows XP recovery. However, this time around I am getting asked for the adminitrator's password to do the recovery. Because I do not know the password, I am at a standstill. Is there a way I can manually change the password or do any of you know another way to fix the problem? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks all.

Have you done a virus scan?

I have not yet encountered where I had needed an admin password for a recovery.

do you know that it actually has an administrator password? Most Oems leave the Administrator password blank on their XP installs. Try not giving it a password if you havent tried that yet. As far as another way to fix the problem we first need to know what the problem is. Just saying it is blue screening only tells us it has a problem but doesn't give a clue as to what it may be. More info like the error message displayed when it bluscreens would be helpful.
