Yesterday I turned on my computer to find the following error (paraphrasing):

The file:

C:\windows\system32\config\system

is missing or corrupt. Use your original Windows setup disc to repair.

Anyway, I don't even have my original XP disc anymore (lost it about 3 years ago) so I had to do some research. I ended up using an NTFS dos boot disc, and replacing the corrupt file with a copy from the windows\repair folder.

The PC boots up now, which is a relief, but because I had to import a much earlier version of this registry file, some things don't work. I didn't have System Restore turned on, so I can't use that.

The most glaring problem is networking. I have a PCI wireless ethernet card that I use to connect to a router/DSL setup, for the internet. The card is installed and "working properly" but I can't get it to do anything. None of the Windows options related to networking (add a new network, add a new connection, etc.) will even work. The router and modem are working fine; another computer in my house connects to them no problem.

Any advice on how to restore functionality, not just with the internet but in general? There are various other quirks, but if I had the internet working I could probably sniff out a solution for them (I'm at work now).
