Windows XP Pro

I have a copy of Win XP Pro, about 3 or 4 years old that I have been using in my current rig. Well my current rig's mobo burnt up and I plan to build a new C2D. I figure I can save a few bucks and use the XP copy I already own.

Will I run into any problems doing this? Will activation be a problem?
It is a legit copy and has only been used on the one PC, not too many upgrades over the years, maybe video cards and ram in and out of it. It's bneen through probably 5 formats or so on the rig over the years.

Also, say I do get it installed with the new rig, what will happen if I ever find a replacement mobo for my old rig and boot it up with my hdd that contains this version? Shouldn't be a problem if the PC is offline, right? I figure if I ever do get that PC up and running again and want to use it as a backup I can just spend the $$ on a new version at that time.

Edit Sorry if this has been asked before, I did a search and couldn't find an answer to this direct question. I am assuming it will work, but I'd dread having my new rig arrive and have no OS for it. [/b]

Thanks for replies!

It all depends on the version of Win XP you got. If it is an OEM (came with the computer or bought as an OEM like from Dell or other system builders), it might not work or will not work just to be more definite. In addition, if it is an OEM you are in violation of the EULA if you use it on a different system. Now if you replaced the burnt mobo and you should still be within the EULA.

If you have the retail version, it should work and not in violation at all as long as it is used only in one system. Activation shouldn't be a problem if it is a retail version.

If you own the retail version and you install it on a different system, when you go to try and activate it over the internet it will not let you.

You will have to call the number that it gives you and talk to an automated person and then a real person telling them that you only have that copy installed on one computer and then they will give you a new activation number.

Not necessarily a problem, but certainly a hassle.

If you have the OEM version then you are just out of luck I think.

I have reactivated OEM XP installs on replacement hardware dozens upon dozens of times. They will ask you if the copy of windows is on any other systems, and of course you say no, and they will then give you the 42-digit manual activation code. No problemo.

Thanks for the tip about calling in for the activation! Yes, it is a full retail version, so it looks like I am good 2 go
