I have a legit copy of Win XP Pro from 2002. This is the very first verison of XP when it was released. I was going to install it but decided not to back then. 2 questions:

1) I want to install XP Pro on a PC that has XP Home on it already. The Box says "For PCs without Windows or PCs with windows 95 or earlier versions". What would happen if I install this on the PC with Home on it already. Will it do an upgrade or is that box telling the truth?

2) SInce this is such an early version of the XP OS, is there 1 universal patch I can use to cover every bug theyhave fixed or do it have to do install every patch that came out?

any hints would help, thanks!:D

1) I don't think you can upgrade Home to Pro. You will probably have to do a clean install of Pro.

2) You'll need to download Service Pack 1 and install that. Then run Windows Update to get the other patches.

Hi, welcome to AT!

A cleaner way to install XP is to "slipstream" the existing XP cd into the Service Pack 1 network installer. Search Google for that, and you'll be able to take your XP disk and integrate SP1 into it so when you install the OS, it'll be running SP1 already.

It's a very good method especially since SP1 ensures support of many newer technologies, such as large hard drives (Above 137GB I think)

1. It should upgrade fine. Worst case, you could tell it to do a repair install, which should convert it.
2. There is only 1 version. XP Pro is XP Pro. Anyway, as the others said, download service pack 1, and then go to windows update and install the rest of the critical updates.

guilty conscience? lol anyway to answer your questions:

1. I don't think you can upgrade from home to pro, as Blayze said. But just pop in the disc, and click setup, and when it asks you what type of install you want to do, choose "Upgrade" instead of "New (or clean) Install". If upgrade isn't listed in the drop-down box, then I guess you can't upgrade.

2. Just run windows update right after you connect to the 'net. Let it download all updates, it is usually around 50MB for everything (except SP1, DirectX, and Windows Media Player). But you only need the critical updates. The rest just add features.
