Windows XP Pro SP1 (all patches) - Internet Explorer Problems

Dunno what's up. Windows Media Player 9 isn't loading for some reason either. But IE6 won't access any websites. I can ping anything, update antivirus, etc. But no browsing. I disabled ZoneAlarm and it still does this. Any ideas? 🙂

I've got a similar problem on one computer......mine occures when the computer has been running for a while. If I reboot I can connect normally for some time. If I loose the dial-up connection, I have to reboot to reconnect. I can connect to my ISP....but that "page cannot be displayed" screen comes up. Don't have clue what's happening. Other computers using the same dial-up # work ok. (IE6 with all updates).

i just fixed a PC that did that. it was fine, did a Windows Update, NO INTERNET.

Ran Spybot about 6 times (twice for each user) and Adaware 6 times. and VOILA i'm on the internet again.

Ya gotta love MS ...you're finally safe from vulnerabilities and buffer over-runs!

btw, I am a staunch WinXP user (SP2 rc1)

No suggestions. I'm listening.

make sure that windows didn't turn on its firewall for some reason and its configured crazily. Go into your tcp/ip and make sure everthing is up to snuff. Make sure zonealarm is up and see if something is hijacking your system when you go online. I would ask a buddy to download firefox and watch your security and instability disappear. Except pdf files which firefox still can't seem to load without me having to close firefox down. Make sure your internet explorer options are all set to default. Check your services.msc and make sure nothing has been disabled that shouldn't be; like tcp/ip

are you sure you don't have a virus, there was virus in May that didn't allow to go the internet, you had to download a cleaner from somewhere else and run to cleanit .

Web browsers use a DNS server to translate the name of the website into the IP of the website. Other programs just connect using the IP.
In the past my DNS server went down, and I could only get places by typing the IP into the address bar instead of the name of the website.
Open the Command Prompt and type "ping www.(pick a site).com", and if it can get to the DNS server it will say "pinging 203.453.23.2343 (ex.)"
Then you know the dns server is working. If not, you can always type your own in, or just wait till it gets ironed out. I ended up calling a friend on a different ISP and borrowing his DNS server.

Edit- if you can obtain an IP address from pinging the name of a website, try entering the IP address into IE and see if it can connect then.

I found the problem. Some malware program was disabling the Local Area Connection on startup. I used Adaware 6 to remove the file and re-enabled the connection. No problems since.
