Windows XP Pro OEM (Dell) Slipstreaming problems

OK, I'm trying to reinstall XP on a computer (a Dell OptiPlex 170L) with the Dell Windows XP Pro disk that I got with the computer. Its a real XP Pro disk (not one of those POS "restore" thingamajobies), and includes SP1a. I wanted to slipstream the disk with SP2 as it would be "cleaner" and quicker to do so rather than install it after Windows is installed. However, when I go through the process of trying to integrate SP2 into the XP disk (yes, I do know how to do this, as I have done it before with another XP disk for my uncle), and it gives me an error saying: "Setup cannot integrate Service Pack 2 with setup files that already contain integrated updates." I have never run into this error before, so I obviously don't have a clue on how to fix it. If anyone knows how to fix this, your help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I've had that problem when you try to add more things to an already integrated disk. Looks like dell added their drivers to SP1a and modified the disk. You'll probably have to get an OEM or Retail copy instead of using the Dell provided disk. You should be able to call Dell and request a copy of the OEM media.

Only thing is, the warranty expired in April of this year (only a 1 year warranty). I dug around some more, and saw that there are also some post-SP1 hotfixes on the disk. I tried to remove them, but it still does not work. The disk itself is just a standard Windows disk with SP1a integrated, and Dell OEM system info files. No Dell-specific drivers, etc.

I don't have the dough to get another copy of XP, as this one should work fine, but I want to slipstream SP2 into it. I really didn't think that it would have a problem doing so, but it seems that the SP2 integrator is a bit sensitive to what it will integrate to. Is there any way that I could bypass this "check", or remove the updates to make it work?

In regards to this page, the instructions on this slipstream method work for Dell/OEM discs.

I haven't tried to validate it myself, but the people in the Dell community forums say they have had luck. Worth a shot!

Well, I finally got SP2 to integrate. I used a nice little utility called nLite to do it. I went to the "Integrate Service Pack" option, and it told me that there were hotfixes that were already integrated, and in order to integrate the Service Pack, they would need to be removed. I let it do its thing, and then integrated SP2 using the DOS prompt (by typing: C:\XPSP2\i386\update>update /s:C:\XP\). It did its thing, and updated fully.

Thanks for the help guys, I guess it took me poking and prodding to get it to work ;).
