Guys. I did a trade/purchase for a Windows XP professional disk. Its the real thing, and has a serial number with it. When I try to install, and go to the CD key, it would tell me either the key was in use, or the key didnt work. Is there a way I can contact Microsoft, and have them send me a new one, if I sent them the original back?

Also, I have windows XP home edition that came with my laptop. However, its on the recovery disk, and installs all sorts of CRAP. Can I contact Microsoft and have them send me just a regular version without the mumbo jumbo on it?

if the key says its been activated too many tmes dont worry they dont have a clue of how many machines it is on, just tell them you had to reformat, microsoft will only send you a new cd key if it was not an oem version if it was an oem version they will point you in the direction of where you purchased it.

good luck with that. ;)

OEM - software sold at a discount price to a reseller. the reseller makes a few extra bucks on their sale and in return they offer all support for the software. it is also tied to a piece of hardware (motherboard) when it's installed and is meant to only be used with that machine. if you've upgraded your motherboard you've had to call in and get an auth code to get it working again. they've never hassled me about the OEM copy of xp home i have, but that is their policy regardless.

so yeah, they don't support OEM copies of windows. they will provide you with an auth code if the registration says it's been installed too many times. they ask you a couple questions and then give you the code, you enter it, then you go along happily.
