Windows XP Pro not deleting TMP files

I noticed this strange behavior recently, and it is becoming quite annoying. Many of my folders, including my desktop, are being overrun with TMP files (temporary). I have only noticed this happening with MS Office XP programs. For example:

I create a new Excel worksheet, make a few changes and save it a few times. When I close Excel, there will be a few TMP files still in the folder I created the worksheet in. I understand Office programs create TMP while saving and for other reasons, but they normally automatically delete themselves when the application is closed. This is not happening for me.

I have noticed this with just about any Office program: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Project, and Visio. I am using Microsoft Office XP (2002) for Students and Teachers. I installed Project and Visio from my university's MSDNAA license. If I am doing some serious homework for a few hours, I might have 8-10 of these TMP files lying around. This is most annoying on my desktop.

Any idea how I can fix this problem? I already made sure I am not viewing hidden files. My computer is well-protected and maintained, but I still ran spyware checks, virus scan, and a registry fix. I am assuming a setting got changed somewhere, but I don't know where to look.

Thanks ahead of time to anyone who can help me out!
