Hi everyone,

A quick question about networking in windows XP Pro. I'm currently in college and share some of my files on the network. I used to run ME, where it was pretty easy to password protect stuff. But I'm having trouble finding a similar option in XP. Does anyone have any hints?

I've been having the same problem. I knew alot about file sharing in win9x but they've changed it a lot since and I can't find any options in the gui. You probably have to edit the permissions manually which I don't want to learn since NTFS makes no sense to me. Maybe since XP is usually set to NTFS that's why the option isn't visable. You might find it better just to use Gnucleus to start a gnutella network. Those seem to work pretty well in college lans.

First of all, this isn't a "problem", it's how the OS works. It has been this way for all versions of NT up to XP. Since NT was never meant to be a home OS, it was built with the more robust NTFS file system for better security. Believe it or not, this way is much better than the 9x way. And there really isn't anything to "learn" about NTFS, and XP will guide you through setting up users pretty well. But if you really can't handle it and you want to share files the old way, maybe you shoud think about going back to 9x.

That wasn't meant as a slam, but I was just pointing out a fact. The two individuals were implying that they couldn't figure out the NTFS security, so I recommended they use an OS that allowed them to use the simpler method.
