Windows XP Pro, external USB HD - Consistent autorun on wakeup

Muse

Lifer
I have other XP machines with an external USB HD. Why does this one every time I awake it from suspend ask me if I want to play music files in Winamp, open folders, etc. from the external HD? 😵 How can I stop that?

There is a regular Windows Update which disables all autorun capability of USB drives. I avoided it initially, but I plan to install it — let me know if you find it!

I installed that before I posted this thread and it had no effect.

Yep. Turn off autorun and it'll stop harassing you.

Don't know how. Anyway, this is the machine that I bought Windows 7 for, so it should be a non-issue in a week or two! Before I do that I'm going to install an SSD I bought over a year ago for the machine. It will be a new world. Thanks!

That did have an answer for this, i.e. clicking properties for the HD, the Autorun tab and disabling the behavior.

Now, I suddenly and without warning have a similar problem. When I awaken the machine Picasa pops up and is accumulating data on all the image files on the HD! I use Picasa occasionally to put up galleries on the web, but I don't care for some of the things it does at the moment, including sucking in all my images. I might like that if I knew how to handle it. I looked in Picasa, can't find a way of turning off that behavior. So far, I'm just closing the window, affirming that I want to stop Picasa from sucking in images.
