Windows XP Pro 64 and Windows 7

I currently use XP Pro 64 on the desktop on a SSD drive. I also have a 500 GB platter connected too. What I want to do is make a partition on the platter and put Win 7 on it. Will the boot.ini file automatically append a new OS install or do I have to use EasyBCD?

Just found this and looks pretty straight forward

But I clicked the link to find out how to prevent XP from removing Win 7 restore points and I didn't get anything.
