Saw this over on neowin.net, thought people might be interested:

Thanks Bob of Activewin, Amazon.Com, one of the first and best internet American e-stores, has just started to take pre-orders for the highly anticipated new operating system coming from Redmond. The upgrade version of Microsoft Windows XP, set to be released on October 25th, is actually priced at $199.99 (thats just the upgrade version!)

Full rundown of prices:

Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition - Upgrade $99.99 Win98/NT/2000/Me

Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition - Full $199.99

Microsoft Windows XP Professional - Upgrade $199.99 Win98/NT/2000/Me

Microsoft Windows XP Professional - Full $299.99

As you can see Windows NT4/98 is the minimum upgrade platform.

Heres the link from there to preorder also:

I still don't get why the prices are so high, they have 94% of the market you would think with all that volume the prices would come down. Mac OS X cost $129.95 and they have what 2% of the market. Oh well I guess when your a monoply you charge whatever you want.

it's not that expensive... i wish it was a lot higher so less home suckers would buy it... less support for XP means longer before they stop supporting the older OSes...

Yeah, no kidding. $200 for the upgrade to pro? Thats too much, if you ask me.

Oh well, I'll just take it out of the library at school if I decide I want it. Gotta love university licensing agreements.

Interesting to see they're still distingushing the business user from the home user (home vs pro). I thought that would be stopped.

ahahahhaa...u'r kidding right? $99.99 for a operating system is alot? Look at some applications. They run into thousands of dollars. You could say Adobe has a good portion of the graphics design w/ programs like photoshop and they're charging like $500 each.

I could pirate XP if I wanted to, but guess what? It doesn't even deserve an hour and a half of my bandwidth, 700MB of my hard drive space or one blank CD, much less $200! Screw Microsoft!

Eh well, don't have to worry about spending that kind of money. Just going to hop on over to the school library for my copy. Heck, I'll just download it off the servers.

I don't know why people diss Microsoft when they are undoubtely using their products even now as we speak...

I, for one, will search for a cheap copy of XP and buy it. If you can't beat 'em, join 'em.

OS X costs $30 more than Win XP, is less compatible with most mainstream programs than Win XP, and is less of an improvement over OS 9 than XP was over ME, and you're telline me MS is the one screwing the customers? I think you need some new glasses..

$200 is a little more than I'd like to spend, but I plan on buying it when I build my next system. I've heard mostly positive things about it.

yellowperil,

The home version is smpless and probably missing a few network features, like IIS and ftp server.

that's a lot of money that I sure won't be spending. I think I'll buy a used flat bottom boat instead.

I've tried XP and it's not that bad. It takes a while to get use to some of the GUI changes but overall it was pretty solid. Will I switch to it? Nope...Win2k does everything I need it to, it's less bloated, and very stable.

Again I ask: What is the point of moving to WinXP?

There's nothing that's compelling about the OS and seems to be Win2000 with a spit-shine - and suckers that just "gotta" up-grade will blow off about WinXP's "greatness."

I just don't see it. WinXP is the suckers OS.

<< AT members's FTP servers will be busy on October 25th. ;) >>

nonono, Oct. 25 is when it's officially released to the public. Stores have them in stock many days before, and so do all the good sources. I'd estimate October 10-15th. Not that I'd know anything about that sorta thing....;)
